Robert Farum (often known in the community simply as "Robert") was a pioneering figure in early gay BDSM/leather culture. He operated RFM Products from the 1970s through the late 1980s out of a mail-order shop and workshop in Glendora, California.
Farum's business was unique because it integrated the production of gay male erotica with the physical manufacturing of specialized BDSM equipment.
1. The Meaning of "RFM"
The initials RFM stood directly for his name: Robert Farum Manufacturing (or RFM Products). Early flyers and classified ads in gay leather magazines also listed the entity as RFM Dungeon Devices.
2. Magazine Publishing & Erotica
Farum published heavy bondage and sadomasochistic erotica targeted strictly at gay men during a time when such material was highly underground and heavily censored.
- The Magazines: RFM produced series featuring photos and illustrations of men bound in complex rigs. Unlike slicker, mainstream gay adult magazines of the era (like Blueboy or Mandate), RFM magazines focused entirely on extreme bondage, flagellation, and suspension.
- The Narrative Works: Farum wrote and published serialized autobiographical/fiction booklets detailing the master/slave dynamic. His most famous published title was the multi-volume series The Life of a Masochist, which circulated widely through mail-order catalogs and gay adult bookstores in hubs like San Francisco, Los Angeles, and New York.
3. Equipment Manufacturing & Innovation
What truly set Robert Farum apart was that he was a craftsman. He did not just publish media; he built the physical apparatuses shown in his magazines.
- The Catalogs: RFM issued thick, illustrated mail-order catalogs. These functioned as a blueprint for setting up private home dungeons.
- Dungeon Devices: Farum designed and manufactured heavy-duty wooden and metal gear from his Glendora facility. His inventory included customized bondage racks, spanking benches, wooden crosses, stocks, pillories, and suspension rigs.
- High-End Leather & Tools: He also produced hand-crafted leather goods, specialized paddles, whips, and complex pulley systems designed specifically for safe male suspension.
